I've been meaning to write this blog for a while, but was worried that, by the time I got around to it, it would be too late. I try to capture the kids' phases in a timely manner because otherwise, the cute little things they do tend to get lost among the minutia of everyday life. Since I haven't blogged in a while, unfortunately quite a few things have been lost. Many memories get sifted through that sieve called Mommy Brain never to be retrieved again.
One constant for the past couple months is Nicole's insistence on being called Sister. When I asked her why she wanted to be called this, she said "Because I am." Duh, mom! Anyway, while I appreciate that dubbing herself Sister indicates a free-thinking, independent attitude, I miss calling her Bug. She'll always be The Bug, Buggy, Bug-atron or some variation to me.
I'm not kidding when I say that Nicole flat-out refuses to be called anything but Sister. Along with the inconvenience of having to call your child a whole new name, the Sister moniker has the unfortunate side-effect of conjuring up a sassy attitude. When we're trying to hustle her along and we say, Come on, Sister, it sounds (to outsiders) like we're being harsh or lapsing into Oh no, she didnnnn't speak. To add to the confusion (again, of outsiders), is that Nicole's nickname has its own soundtrack, thanks to Daddy -- Manfred Mann's baffling Blinded by The Light:
Some silicone sister with a manager mister told me I go what it takes
She said "I'll turn you on sonny to something strong,
play the song with the funky break
Mercifully, Nicole doesn't repeat the "silicone" part, but just says, I'm Sister Sister, with the Mana Mister. This declaration is truly confusing to outsiders, which I guess is fitting since many of us have scratched our head at the song's other lyrics, such as:
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
What the heck is a deuce anyway and why is it revved up? I looked online and there are quite a few sites where people discuss the meaning in this song. I'm not that desperate for entertainment that I'll read them thoroughly though. Just know that the sites are there, so if you get a hankering, look it up.
Here's Sister in a pensive mood. Just don't call her Nicole
lisa - I love this. Surely a pain to remember a new name? I can barely get the boys names straight. It usualy comes out Ben, Adam, whatever you name is. Much less throw in sister. Nicole sounds like she's growing into her role as sister. We miss you much around here!
