Yes, we're all a little dazed and confused around here these days. Why, you ask? One word: school. There are a lot of discombobulated folks in Steiner Ranch right now, parents and children alike. As one friend whose son just started kindergarten put it, "Kindergarten is kicking my a*@!" Those of us with preschool-age children are feeling it too. The transition is tough.
Last week, all three George Kids had their first days in a new Montessori school in our neighborhood called "School in the Hills." The boys go Tuesday, Thursday and Nicole is a MWF girl. The first day goes fairly smoothly for most. I found this to be the case when Nicole started preschool. The kids seem to enjoy the novelty of a a new environment. But, by the second day they're getting a bit wiser. They're thinking, "Okay, that was fun for one day, but now can I go home and see mommy?"
Dane & Logan's class is 18 months-2 years so the majority of the children have never been away from home. Oh, the heartbreak! When I drove up yesterday, there were probably seven toddlers wailing "Mommy!" Being a seasoned preschooler, there were no tears from Nicole, but Logan cried the first day and Dane cried the second. On the third day, they both cried. It's painful dropping them off. From years of dropping off Nicole, I know the drill. Quick kiss, hug and "I love you," then march right out. No lingering good-bye's unless you want the drama to be even more prolonged.
I'm finding that the preschool transition is making the boys extremely clingy. Yesterday, they trailed around me endlessly, clutching my legs, crying "Carry Me!" It's getting a lot harder to carry both of the boys at once since they each weigh over 30 pounds. Also, it's very difficult to make dinner or do anything, with two hysterical toddlers at your feet. The folks who run the Montessori predict that the transition will take up to six weeks. In the meantime, it's your dazed and confused Mommy George signing off.
